Children Nationwide Lacking Proper Exercise

December 18, 2018

Several studies have shown that in recent years, children are exercising and staying active far less than in previous generations. This lack of activity has led to an increased obesity rate, reduced physical fitness, and psychological struggles for children everywhere.

Kids Not Getting Healthy Amounts Of Exercise

Children in today’s world tend to exercise less than in previous generations, with many not getting enough daily activity to remain healthy. In fact, less than one-third of children nowadays reach the Sports and Fitness Industry Association’s classification of “active to a healthy level,” which is just 25 minutes of high-calorie-burning physical activity three times a week. This means not even one-third of children have access to the full benefits of an active lifestyle, limiting their potential physical and psychological development.

Who’s To Blame?

It seems fairly easy to blame technology for children’s lack of activity in recent years. With the rise of video games, mobile devices, and other unique technologies, children have grown less active overall. However, this still does not fully explain the lack of activity, as only 25 minutes three days per week is required to reach a healthy level of activity.

Instead, it may be at least in part due to the fact that schools nationwide have been cutting down on scheduled recess in favor of more structured class time. This keeps kids from staying active during daily routines, getting them accustomed to a less healthy, sedentary lifestyle. When schools reduce the amount of time kids are able to play, kids are limited in where they can find activity.

Unless they are able to access commercial indoor playground equipment outside of school, children are often limited to what activity they can get during school hours. This sort of equipment may be found in after-school programs, recreation centers, and even some businesses that are particularly healthy-minded.
